With its deep marbling of vivid colors, Lion's Rock, Repeat is an excellent example of this striking series of three dimensional works in which Sam Gilliam poured and layered acrylic on birch plywood constructions. Beginning in 1997, Gilliam began showing these at Klein Art Works in Chicago, and exhibited them in Solo Exhibition: Gilliam in 3-D at the Kreeger Museum, Washington, DC the following year. Other examples can be found in the collections of Smith College Museum of Art, Northhampton, MA, and the Department of Veteran Affairs, Philadelphia. Binstock p. 138.
