New York City-born Alexander Girard began his career in Europe in architecture and interior design. He became Director of Design for Herman Miller's textile division in 1952, giving him "the freedom to express himself. With primary colors, concise geometric patterns, and a touch of humor, he injected joy and spontaneity into his designs" (www.hermanmiller.com). Sandro designed invitations, signs, product tags and other materials to promote this Textiles & Objects shop that he and the Herman Miller company opened in 1961 in Manhattan. Girard's flair for curating and marketing custom furniture and decorative items drew in Herman Miller Inc. as a business partner - a collaboration that continued until 1973. Founded in Michigan as the Star Furniture Co. in 1905, the eventual Herman Miller Inc. originally specialized in traditional wood furniture, expanding into Modernist design in the 30s. Their modern furniture line debuted at the Century of Progress exposition in Chicago. The company has since collaborated with many top designers, such as Isamu Noguchi, Charles and Ray Eames, Jack Kelley and more.

From the estate of Alexander Kaplen.
