The National Ski Patrol (NSP) nonprofit was founded in 1938 in Stowe, Vermont, with its members each holding one of five roles: patrollers, medical associates, alumni members, associate members and mountain hosts. It is the largest winter education organization in the world, providing education, outreach, and credentialing related to outdoor recreation and safety. From 1941 to 1944, the NSP's responsibilities included recruiting and vetting soldiers for the 87th Mountain Infantry Regiment of the U.S. Army.
