This significant and monumental painting is a series of seven self-portraits by Sedrick Huckaby III. Each is taken from the same perspective of looking down into a mirror with various objects in his studio. Together the triyptch is a powerful statement and reflection on the artful balance between portrayal and painterly expression in Huckaby's work. While painting the same pose in the same manner, the differences of each self-portrait reflects his conceptual approach to portraiture. Huckaby is an important contemporary portrait artist whose oeuvre includes many such richly painted and oversized oil portraits of himself and his family - including his grandmother, parents, wife and son, siblings, cousins, nephews, aunts, and uncles. Huckaby has sought to not only canonize the ordinary but important people in his life but also to elevate the African-American figure in the canon of art.
