Big Mama's Space is an excellent example of the work of Sedrick Huckaby, an important contemporary portrait artist. This painting of the late Hallie Beartrice Carpenter is part of a 2008 series depicting Huckaby's grandmother in the interior of her home and with other friends and family. Huckaby's portrait oeuvre is full of many such richly painted oil portraits of himself and his entire family - including his parents, wife, son, siblings, cousins, nephews, aunts, and uncles. Huckaby has sought to not only canonize the ordinary but important people in his life but also to elevate the African-American figure in the canon of art. He has been the recipient of numerous prestigious awards including a Guggenheim fellowship, Joan Mitchell Foundation grant and a Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation grant. His works are in the collections of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Amon Carter Museum of American Art, African American Museum of Dallas, Texas, Whitney Museum of American Art, Nasher Museum of Art at Duke University, Durham and the Minneapolis Institute of Art.
