Additional Details

First edition published by Carey and Hart after assuming rights to Tanner's atlas. The pair's imprint replaces that of Tanner on the title-page; however, they are quite transparent with the atlas's authorship. From their publisher's notice speaking of this revised edition: "the accuracy of the information contained in the Universal Atlas… the most elegant and complete work of the kind that has yet appeared in the United States, and greatly superior in its representations of American Geography to any similar production published elsewhere.... The publishers however, cannot refrain from stating their belief, that in this his latest effort, Mr. Tanner has produced a work which reflects on him the highest credit, and proves that his fame as a geographer is richly merited." Imprints on each map range from 1836-1841 variously credited to Tanner and Carey & Hart. The New Jersey map is after Thomas Gordon; Texas is after Thomas Bradford. Ristow, pages 200-201.
