THEODOOR VAN ERP (1874-1959). DELFTSCH STUDENTEN CORPS / D:16. 1928.
391/4x251/2 inches. Flach Sneek.
condition A-: foxing in image; minor paper loss in margins. Japan.
Van Erp was born in the Dutch colony of Indonesia, went on to serve time in the military and moved to the Netherlands in 1912 where he took up as a painter and lithographer. This image is promoting the festivites that were staged every five years to celebrate the founding of the University of Delft. While the imagery of the graphic poster is difficult to comprehend (the gears of progress turning within the minds of students?), the layout and symmetry are incomparable, with the center square echoed by two smaller squares in the corners, and the well-balanced text along the top and bottom edges.
