UNGERER, TOMI (1931-2019) "You can tell the adults by the paper they read." Color lithographed poster for a 1965 New York Times ad campaign that has been reworked with India ink and touched up with white paint; 19 x 26 inches. Rebacked on board. Arriving in New York from Strasbourg in 1956 with only $60 in his pocket, Tomi Ungerer quickly became one of the most accomplished and successful commercial artists in America of the 1960s. He transformed the picture book and conquered Madison Avenue through his sardonic wit and extraordinary technical skill. He also caused much controversy and made many enemies through his anti-Vietnam War posters and sly erotica. He gave it all up when he moved to Canada in 1971 and then later to Ireland, and reestablished himself firmly within the Continental European market. By the time of his death at age 87, trilingual Ungerer was recognized internationally as one of the greatest illustrators of his time. 1965
