VENETIAN SCHOOL, 16TH CENTURY
A Knight in Armor with a Page.

Pen and brown ink and wash on cream laid paper. 286x208 mm; 11 1/4x8 inches. Inscribed "jacobus de cabellis/filius Reip[ubblica]: Veneta/capitaneus Generalis 1520 (or 1570)" in ink, center left recto. Anchor in a circle with a six-pointed star watermark.

Provenance: Sotheby's, New York, January 25, 2006, lot 39; private collection, Massachusetts.

This full-length portrait of a general of the Venetian republic probably relates to a publication of Uomini illustri. The paper has a watermark which appears to have been made in the Veneto, likely circa 1560-80. The type of armor is characteristic of the northern Italy and the Veneto, and would seem to date from the late 15th or early 16th century.
