WALT PEREGOY (DISNEY)
Western-themed animation background concept and cel setup for The Saga of Windwagon Smith. This is an impressive, large Disney Studios background concept painting and multi-cel setup by Walt Peregoy for The Saga of Windwagon Smith (1961). The panoramic background, painted in Peregoy's unmistakable style, depicts the main street of Westport, Kansas, where the film takes place. The cel layers consist of: a. a hand painted cutout affixed to a cel of the "Super Windwagon," ready for its maiden voyage; b. another cel layer with the line work for the Windwagon (which was Xeroxed from layout drawings by Peregoy's then frequent collaborator Ernie Nordli); and c. a blank protective cel overlay.

The Saga of Windwagon Smith was the last of the Disney "Tall Tale" shorts, which also included Pecos Bill, The Legend of Johnny Appleseed, and Paul Bunyan. It was a very small production, from which very little material has survived.

Walt Peregoy is best known for his production design work on such classic Disney films as 101 Dalmations, Mary Poppins, and The Jungle Book, as well as his work at Hanna Barbera for many beloved TV shows, including Wacky Races, The Perils of Penelope Pitstop, and Scooby Doo, Where Are You!
