Additional Details

A rare copy of Washington's famous 1895 Atlanta Exposition Address. With lynching on the rise and many of the social and political gains made following the Civil War turned around; many of the more progressive thinkers of the race such as W.E.B. Du Bois saw this address as the epitome of appeasement. But it was not until 1916, following Washington's death that Du Bois and others would call for a new direction for the race at the Amenia Conference.
