Autograph Letter Signed, "Thornt.," to "Dear Louie," explaining his having to accept a position teaching French at Lake Sunapee Summer School, and discussing the marketing and distribution rights for his recently published The Bridge of San Luis Rey: "Please write me that you will let them have their British Empire. . . ." 2 pages, square 8vo, written on the recto and verso of a single sheet, "Lake Sunapee Summer School" stationery; faint uneven toning on recto, small stain at right edge verso affecting text, horizontal fold. ". . . My duties for next year show up as more and more pretentious and exacting. But also very interesting and good-for-me; its time I grew up somehow.
"A letter at hand from Tom Longmans. They have lost the chance to send the Bridge out . . . . They are disappointed that it is so short, but are going to take it into a kind of gift book with my signature in gilt on the side, etc!
"I walk (alone) 12 miles a day, do long distance swims, and am raging with health. Done some new 3-minute plays after all, not yet got ready a fair copy to offer to a firm--may submit it to you again after all."
