Additional Details

24 April [1941]: ". . . Tons to tell. . . . Busy crowded days. There's something South American in me: we get on fine. . . . My Spanish is still dreadful, but I addressed the flower of Ecuadorian intelligencia in it today. . . ."
[26] June 1966: ". . . In 1962 I felt driven to 'leave civilization'--I went to Arizona and became a hermit for 18 months in a small town on the Mexican border. No telephone; made most of my own meals. Since then I have stayed away from big (English-speaking) cities. I've seen nothing and heard nothing in New York, and little elsewhere.
". . . If I had something specific--and within my competence--to say, I'd be proud to appear in your program."
