WILLIAM H. BRADLEY (1868-1962)

THE CHAP BOOK / THANKSGIVING NO. 1895.

20¼x13½ inches, 52¾x34¼ cm.
Condition A / A-: minor creases and abrasions in margins; small pin holes in top corners. Matted and framed.

Bradley, whose American Art Nouveau style was a combination of Aubrey Beardsley and the work of the Arts and Crafts movement, strove "to introduce good design and taste into everyday life" (Kiehl p. 15). The Chap Book was the first of a spate of late 19th century literary and art magazines. As an indication of how closely Bradley was associated with the Art Nouveau movement, this and several of his other posters were included in the show that marked the opening of Siegfried Bing's Salon de l'Art Nouveau on December 26, 1895. This poster was so popular with collectors that it was out of print in less than two months.
