This portrait of a youth during the Civil Rights struggle is the first painting by this overlooked painter and printmaker to come to auction. Kolawole lived in Munich in the 1960s before returning to the U.S. His work has been included in a number of museum exhibitions, including Afro American Artists Abroad, National Collection of Fine Arts, Smithsonian Institution, and the monograph Black Artists on Art Vol. 1 by Samella Lewis and Ruth Waddy in 1969. More recently, he was included in the 2006 abstract survey Something to Look Forward To, organized by painter Bill Hutson, which traveled to the California African American Museum and the Heckscher Museum, Huntington, NY, and group exhibitions at Wilmer Jennings Gallery at Kenkeleba House, New York.
