WILLIAM LAWSON (DATES UNKNOWN)

SAN FRANCISCO VIA MAINLINER / UNITED AIR LINES. Circa 1953.

30x20 1/4 inches, 76 1/4x51 1/2 cm.
Condition B: extensive restoration over creases and abrasions throughout image; minor repaired tears and restoration at edges.

To achieve the starkly modern vision of the Bay Bridge, Lawson deftly incorporates the use of an airbrush, rendering the multi-span structure itself, along with the distant rolling hills of Berkeley. From the plane's call numbers we know it to be a DC-7, which went into service for United in the early 1950s. It was the first commercial aircraft to make a non-stop flight against the headwinds from the East Coast of America to the West Coast. Rare.
