Willis, Thomas (1621-1675)
Pathologiae Cerebri et Nervosi Generis Specimen.

Amsterdam: Elzevir, 1668.

12mo, author's portrait bound opposite first leaf of text (ink stain affecting Willis's face); bound in modern full sheepskin tooled in blind, final integral blank present, 5 1/8 x 2 7/8 in.

This work, focused particularly on brain pathology and first published in Oxford in 1667, includes some of the earliest accounts of major neurological disorders plaguing Willis's patients, including a variety of convulsions and seizures, with many specifics on the diagnoses and treatment of epilepsy, and one of the first descriptions of meningitis, based on observations Willis made during an outbreak in 1661. The second part of the work is dedicated to Willis's assessment of scurvy.
