Zero Mostel as Tevye in "Fiddler on the Roof."
Etching, 103/4x103/4 inches, full margins. Framed. Signed and numbered 55/150, lower margin. 1975.
"One evening, returning from a tryout of Fiddler on the Roof in Boston, I discovered, from my sketches, that the vest worn by Zero Mostel buttoned the wrong way for a man. I phoned Boris Aronson, the show's designer, and asked whether my sketches were in error or were the men's clothes purposely designed that way. . . .He assured me that in the period Sholom Aleichem was writing about there was no difference in the buttoning of coats worn by Jewish men and women - and yes, they were designed that way in the production. . . I went ahead with my drawing, leaving out this well-researched piece of costuming. I deliberately dressed Zero in a conventionally buttoned vest to avoid crank mail." WOH/26
