BURKHARD MANGOLD (1873-1950) DAVOS / WINTERKUREN. 1916.
39 1/2x28 1/4 inches, 100 1/4x71 3/4 cm. J.E. Wolfensberger, Zurich.
Condition B+ / A-: replaced loss in upper right corner; repaired tears at edges and into lower image.
Mangold's most frequently discussed and most highly valued poster work is a five-panel image, in which each panel represents a different letter in the name of the Swiss resort "Davos." Each of the panels was intended to be a poster in its own right as well as being part of the larger concept. This is the center panel, representing Davos' history as a high-altitude spa. The other panels represent newer winter activities that could be pursued at the resort, such as skiing, sledding and skating.
