Alexander Crummell (1819-1898), son of a former slave, was a New York-born abolitionist and Episcopalian clergyman. He was one of the earliest proponents of Pan-Africanism, and went to Liberia as a missionary from 1853 to 1873, where he delivered this address at the nation's independence day celebration in 1855.
