More than just a simple business circular, this letter is an urgent call for race solidarity: "This is the day of the Negro's career, while he has the pathway of opportunity still opened to him to make himself a potent factor in the World's civilization. Many go to the White Man to spend their money. A man who hates them and their paltry dollar ($), and yet will pass by the Black man in the same business. . . . We are Jim-crowed right here in Newark, N.J. You cannot eat in a restaurant, rent respectable houses, secure positions where you are qualified, get Insurance protection, etc.. . . . We attend Colored Churches, have Colored Preachers, our families are Colored; finally we are buried in the Colored part of White Cemeteries. Now what real tangible objections have you to employing a Colored Undertaker."

Brown established his business in Newark, NJ in 1906, and appears at this address in the Newark directories from 1913 to 1926.
