Additional Details

During this period, the 128th New York was mostly in Mississippi and Louisiana, participating in the Siege of Port Hudson from May to July of 1863. Among the more interesting orders are Department of the Gulf order #17 ("No Negroes will be taken from the Plantations . . . without previous authority") and #31 regarding the Confederate conscription of slaves ("Negroes who desire to escape . . . will follow the flag of the Government, now and forever the flag of Union and Liberty!").
