Additional Details

David Rice Atchison (1807-1886) of Missouri served in the United States Senate from 1843 to 1855. He was an active pro-slavery advocate and was instrumental in the development of the Kansas-Nebraska Act; he led the "Border Ruffians" who attempted to make Kansas a slave state. Atchison also holds a somewhat shaky claim to have served as a one-day acting president of the United States in 1849. This portrait was created toward the end of his Senate career by Polish-born sculptor Henry Dmochowski Saunders (1810-1863).
