Additional Details

A log kept at New Bedford's harbor, recording the arrival and departures of ships, as well as the latest news. Individual ships and their captains are named, along with cargo. A typical entry for 14 April reads in part: "Ar. at New York 13th, bark Magdelin, f[ro]m Coquimbo, with 135 casks oil and 6 bundles whalebone, to State Gardner & Howell (probably from bark Barbara of Sag Harbor condemned at Valparaiso)." Other entries report news arrived by letter or from ships newly arrived in port, indicating locations of ships and barrels of oil on board where applicable. The log includes news of deaths aboard ship, shipwrecks and retrieval operations, and many other details pertinent to the shipping and whaling industry in the 19th-century.
