D'APRES A. M. CASSANDRE DUBO DUBON DUBONNET. Gouache.
163/4x111/2 inches.
Condition A. Minor pencil marks in upper left corner.
After 1932, when Cassandre had designed the exceptionally creative and catchy logo-style concept of the funny little man drinking Dubonnet, the company seized on its popularity and began to use it in any and all possible ways. They designed a whole range of promotional objects for brasseries and cafes that bore the image. These "new" interpretations of the logo were not designed by Cassandre, but were produced by highly skilled apprentices at the Draeger printing studio. (In his memoirs, Raymond Savignac recalls once holding that position which he received upon Cassandre's recommendation to the firm.) This fine gouache was used as the advertisement illustrated on the back of blotting paper. Back in the days when people sat in cafes and wrote their correspondence while they enjoyed their drinks, such blotters were indispensable items. The gouache is an excellent example of original Art Deco art that was used in commercial design, examples of which are hard to find.
