"I had the honor of writing to you on the 1st inst. by return of your messenger who I saw about town two days after. Within the present inclosure you will receive an Act of Congress of yesterday establishing the salary of the auditors of the army accounts at five dollars per day & forage for a servant's horse while in camp. I beg sir you will do me the favour to communicate this to Major Clarke with the addition of my compliments."
Matthew Clarkson (1733-18000) was the chief auditor for the Continental Army, reporting directly to General Washington, later serving as mayor of Philadelphia.
